Sat Kirin launches her tour through England and Germany

May 8, 2009

Sat Kirin, is heading out on the road next week to take her Blessings tour to Europe.  Sat Kirin has managed to keep a really strong traditional Gurbani Kirtan flavor to her music, while making it deeply connect with those of us with a somewhat Westernized musical sensibility.  As such, her music is much beloved at Gurudwaras and Yoga studios alike.

Yogic Lifestyle: The Amazing Cold Shower!

March 24, 2009

It recently occurred to me that having grown up in a yogic community, there are all sorts of wonderful little tidbits of a yogic lifestyle that I have integrated into my life, but never really realized how powerful  it is to have access to them and what a blessing it is to just have them woven into the fabric of my life.  So, from time to time, I will add these things to our blog and would LOVE to hear other people’s experiences with these yogic lifestyle practices.

shower2So, for my first yogic lifestyle tip, I’m going to share my experiences with cold showers.   Growing up, I took a cold shower every morning.  My parents told me it was to stay healthy, and I never questioned it.  As I got older, I started making the switch to hot showers and became completely addicted to the luxury of hot water.   It wasn’t until I was in college, and struggling to keep my head clear enough to maintain my grades that I remembered the heightened clarity that would follow me through the day after a cold shower.

There’s nothing that gives me clarity like a cold shower and helps me face my day – it’s soooo much better than coffee and it’s side effects are spectacular.    Taking a cold shower makes all of your blood rush inward to your organs, flushing out toxins and sending fresh blood through them.  It greatly enhances your circulation, charges your energy, activates your digestive system, circulatory system, lymphatic system and nervous system.

When I moved back to the US from India in 2001, I had allergies for the first time in my life.  When the season for mowing lawns started, my head completely fogged up, I sneezed endlessly and couldn’t stay awake.   I felt horrible and no natural medicines or home remedies could help.  The second year, desparate for a solution,  I started taking cold showers in the morning.  I found that my head would stay clear for hours afterward, and my allergies would clear.  It felt like a small miracle.

shower11Yogi Bhajan taught that yogis should start every day with a cold shower.  Before entering the shower, you should use a sponge or body brush to exfoliate the skin.  Then, rub almond oil over the entire body.  He suggested wearing shorts / underwear in the cold shower to protect the thigh bone’s calcium-magnesium balance.  You should stay in the cold water for a minimum of 3 minutes, and you should be moving the entire time, using your feet to massage your thighs and calves, and using your hands to massage your arms, back, chest, stomach, shoulders and face.

Women should avoid taking cold showers when menstruating.

On this video clip, Yogi Bhajan talks a bit about cold showers at the 2:00 minute mark.

There is also a very powerful form of Hydrotherapy Yogi Bhajan called Ishnaan which is a lengthy self-treatment in cold water.  It’s a really amazing treatment and is worth trying at least once.  Click Here to Read a Lecture about Ishnaan from Yogi Bhajan

Share your experience with cold showers here!  We would love to hear what they’ve done to help you.

1000 Day Meditation: Count Down to the Dawn of the Aquarian Age

February 18, 2009

According to Yogi Bhajan’s teachings, the beginning of the Aquarian Age takes place on 11/11/11.  11′s are pretty spectacular numbers numerologically, so it makes sense to me.  The Kundalini Yoga community started a movement to create a group meditation leading up to this date.  At the 1000 day mark, which was February 14th, people starting doing a meditaiton that was given by Yogi Bhajan in one of his classes.

1000 Years and Beyond

You can get the DVD of the class he taught which was just recently released here:

You can get the CD, Meditations for the Aquarian Age  with the music on it here:

Yogi Bhajan originally taught this meditation with the version of Sat Siri Siri Akal that is on this CD by Nirinjan Kaur.

I’ve seen discussions at the various discussion sites about whether people should stick to only using this version of the mantra or can switch it up with different versions.  The opinions seem to be far ranging, but here is a link to some other CDs with the Sat Siri Siri Akal mantra on them if you want to try out different versions.

Valentine’s Day Meditation – Chanting Sopurkh for the Man You Love

February 8, 2009

Every year, I ask myself what the perfect Valentine’s Day gift would be.   It’s hard to find a gift that really represents the perfect balance between love and spirit.  This year, I have an idea.  Why not try a beatiful meditation / prayer for the man in your life?

Yogi Bhajan, taught that if a woman recites ‘So Purkh’  11 times per day, it has the power to make any man a saint and dissolve any negativity between them.   Yogi Bhajan would often give this practice to women for the men in their lives.

Yogi Bhajan said this was a very powerful shabd, and that it could also be used to do attract a child to you who will become a man of God,  to heal a man, to transform a man into a man of God, to attract a man of God to be your mate, or to make God appear before you.

So if you are a woman who is hoping to find that perfect man (or create the perfect man from the one you’ve got) you can do this mediation as a Valentine’s present for yourself too.

So Purkh is a part of Rehiraas, which is one of the daily banis recited every evening. Rehiras was written by Guru Ram Das and is an incredible piece of poetry and a very powerful prayer.  Guru Ram Das’ energy is all about love and healing, and so his writings seem the perfect foundation for this prayer.

Here is a link to the words and translation, although it’s a very literal and formal translation, you can get the gist of it: http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/So_Purkh

There are two CDs that I know of with this bani on them.

Sopurkh by Nirinjan Kaur

Also, within the So Purkh shabd, one of the stanzas is Sarab Nirantar.  Hari Bhajan did an AMAZING version of this stanza which we put on our Yogi Lounge compilation because we all loved it so much.  You can find it on Sat Hari Singh’s CD Servant of the Heart.

Click Here to Listen to the sound clip: Sarab Nirantar by Hari Bhajan

The Sarab Nirantar track isn’t the same meditation, but it comes from the same shabd, so it’s got that same vibration and intention with a fun twist.

“Woman is the molder of time, the molder of space and of man: the man of tomorrow, the child; the man of today, the husband, and the men of yesterday, the ancestors. The entire society in theory and in reality is based on the spirit of the woman.” —-Yogi Bhajan

Meditation for Prosperity: Aap Sahai Hoa Sachay Daa Sachaa Doa, Har Har Har

December 11, 2008

Yogi Tip from Guru Singh – Excerpt from the Spirit Voyage Winter Solstice Catalog

Mantra: Aap Sahai Hoa Sachay Daa Sacha Doa, Har Har Har

Mudra for Aap Sahai Prosperity Meditation

Mudra for Aap Sahai Prosperity Meditation

Meaning of Mantra:  The Creator has become my protector, the Truest of the True has taken care of me.  Har is the primal name / sound of the Creator.

Mudra: Hands are placed over the heart, left over right.

Time: Chant this mantra for 11 to 31 minutes every day to bring the blessings of prosperity into your life.

End: Inhale and hold the breath for 10 seconds and relax.

Comments from Guru Singh:
Twenty eight years ago I was running a booming business as well as teaching.  Like today, the economy suddenly tanked and we were way over-leveraged to survive a deep slow down.  I sat with Yogi Bhajan at the Los Angeles airport and explained this dilemma.  He gave a mantra to me – first time anyone had heard this one – Aap Sahai Hooaa Suchay Daa Sachaa Dooaa – Har Har Har.  He said to have it playing in the office 24-7.  In 1980 the only way to accomplish this was to use a 60 second cassette loop (made for answering machines).  We recorded 60 seconds of this mantra repeating and we played that cassette until the media fell off the tape nine months later.  During that nine months we came up with revolutionary ways to not only survive but to thrive.  This mantra overcomes all challenges.

We have completed ‘The Guru Singh Experience Volume 2′ – it will be released in December 2008. Aap Sahai Hooaa is going to be included on Volume 3, due out in Spring 09.

Practice this posture with this most exalted mantra and experience the ownership of a more expanded, prosperous existence. The following qualities of God will manifest within your own psyche.

Healing the Wounds of Love by Guru Raj Kaur and Nirinjan Kaur

October 27, 2008

I love when we are able to share new releases that really offer a tool for people to use in their own lives.  This new CD, Healing the Wounds of Love is a great example. The music on this CD is a special treat for lovers of Gurbani Kirtan.  Guru Raj Kaur’s rich, energetic voice has been a favorite at Gurudwaras for many years.  On this album, she teams up with her daughter, Nirinjan whose smooth, gentle voice is a beautiful counterpoint to her mother’s.

About this CD, they write: “Love brings us to life, gives us courage and inspires us to service and sacrifice. To live fully, we need to learn how to heal the wounds of love which we all carry. Shabd Hazaray is the “Shabd Worth 1000 Shabds.” It is the purest and most powerful love song ever written. This amazingly beautiful CD will take you through that process of deep healing.”

Here is the meditation – I pulled from our Blog Post: Mera Man Loche – Meditation to Heal the Wounds of Love you can see more meditations at www.yogamusic.wordpress.com, our Yoga Music Blog .

Meditation: Aad Sach Jugad Sach / Mera Man Loche

Source: Yogi Bhajan Lecture, July 7, 1987

Posture: Sit in easy pose with the eyes closed and the hands resting on the knees. (The KRI Authentic Relationships Teacher Training Manual shows sitting in Gyan Mudra, so you can use this mudra too.)

Mera Man Lochai Meditation

Healing the Wounds of Love: This meditation is meant to bring positive change to your current relationships while removing past pains that have imbedded themselves in your heart and psyche.  To start with you can do this meditation for 11 days.  As you do it, you will feel clarity and empowerment to make positive change and to begin to experience authentic relationships.  You can continue doing this meditation daily for as long as you feel it serves you.

Mantra: This meditation merges two mantras. It opens with:

Aad such, jugaad such, haibhay such, nanak hosee bhay such

This mantra is repeated again between each of the first four verses from the daily prayer Shabd
Hazaray
found in the Sacred Nitnem. After the fourth verse, this mantra is repeated four more times. For this meditation, you repeat this sequence 11 times.

So the entire recitation goes like this:

Aad such, jugaad such, haibhay such,
nanak hosee bhay such

Mayraa man lochai gur darshan taa-ee
Bilap karay chaatrik kee ni-aa-ee
Trikhaa na utarai Shaant na aavai

Aad such, jugaad such, haibhay such,

About Shabad Hazaray:  This shabd, found in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, was written as letters between Guru Arjan and his father Guru Ram Das.  It is beautiful poetry.
You can read the story abou these letters here: http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Shabad_Hazaray

Here is an attempt at translating the words, although all translations contain some form of personal interpretation since Gurmukhi as a language can contain many depths of meanings.

My mind longs for the vision of the Guru’s Darshan
It cries out like the thirsty song bird for the nectar of your name.
My thirst is not quenched, and I can not find peace
Until I receive the Darshan the beloved saint.

I give myself, and my soul
for your Darshan, my beloved Guru!
Your face is so beautiful, and the sound of your words (shabd) is so filled with inner wisdom.
It has been too long since this rainbird has had even a glimpse of water.
Blessed is the land, where you live, my friend and loved one,
my Divine teacher.

I give myself, and my soul, to my beloved, my Divine Guru
An instant away from you, brings darkness
When will I meet You, my beloved Waheguru?
I can’t endure this night, sleep eludes me too
Until I see your home, my beloved Guru!

I give myself, and my soul to your true home, my beloved Guru!

By good fortune, I met my Saint Guru
and I have found that the immortal creator is within the home my own self
and so I will always serve you and never be separated from you even for an instant.

Guru Nanak says- I’m your slave, my beloved Lord.
I give myself and my soul. Servant Nanak lives to serve you.

Free Prosperity Mantra Download – Find Peace during the Economic Crisis

October 15, 2008

Last week, as the US stock market was suffering its worst losses in US history and Iceland  had to declare bankruptcy, I was reflecting upon yogic teachings on prosperity.. Most of the people that I spoke to were feeling the effects of the crisis in some form.

We looked around our music collection for a meditation & mantra for prosperity. We found this version Har Har Har Har Gobinday with the Eugene Sangat featuring Snatam kaur to be done in the following mudra for prosperity.  This is a powerful meditation and you can really feel the energy building as you pull your navel in with each ‘har.’

Click Here to Download the Music

Har Har Har Har Gobinday Meditation for Prosperity:

Each time you chant 'Har,' quickly open and close your hands, pulling in your navel.

Postures for Propserity Meditaiton

“This mantra brings prosperity, happiness, and saves us from calamities.  It is the sound current which brings a shield and brings good luck and removes discomfort and disease.  It is the key to the doorway of self elevation.”  – Yogi Bhajan

Instructions: Sit in easy pose with your spine straight.  Bend your elbows so that your hands are comfortable in front of you at approximately shoulder height.  Chant the mantra:

Har Har Har Har Gobinday – Har Har Har Har Mukanday – Har Har Har Har Udaray – Har Har Har Har Aparay – Har Har Har Har Hariang – Har Har Har Har Kariang – Har Har Har Har Nirnamay – Har Har Har Har Akamay

When you chant ‘Har,’ quickly open and close your hands as you pull the navel point in and up.  Repeat these actions each time you chant ‘Har.’

Yogi Bhajan taught a number of other prosperity meditations including one with Tantric Har by Simran Kaur.

Ra Ma Da Sa – Healing Meditation – Free Download

September 29, 2008

Earlier this year, Snatam asked us to help her figure out how to make her Ra Ma Da Sa available for free to everyone around the world so that there could be a tool available for anyone who wanted it to start a healing meditation for themself, their loved ones, and the planet.  I am happy to say that we have now figured out how to make that possible!!

This beautifully and deeply meditative version of Ra Ma Da Sa is made to use for a daily 11-minute meditation.

Click here to go to our site and add it to your shopping cart.  You can then put it on your I-pod, mp3 player, or even burn it to CD.

September 29th – The New Moon: The new moon is a great time to start a meditation.  A lot of the mental and emotional blocks that you might normally encounter are not present at this time.  In fact, during the entire period between the new moon and the full moon, it is an ideal time to start a regular meditation practice, so now is the time – start the healing!
Here are instructions for practicing this meditation:

Healing Ra Ma Da Sa Meditation: Heal Yourself, Heal Your Loved Ones, and Heal the World.

Posture: Sit in easy pose.

Focus: Eyes are closed and focused at the third-eye point.

Mantra: Ra Ma Da Sa, Sa Say So Hung. The mantra should be sung in one complete exhalation. As you chant the first Sa, your navel point is pulled in so that this syllable is abbreviated.  You should also pull your navel point in as you chant Hung.  Hung should be vibrated at the root of the nose. The rest of the syllables are drawn out in a strong, powerful chant. Strive to keep your chant at full volume (loud but not raucous) throughout the meditation.

Meaning of Mantra:
Ra=sun energy
Ma=moon energy
Da=earth energy
Sa=infinity, universal energy
Sa=repeat in second half of mantra
Say=the personal embodiment of Sa
So=the personal sense of merger with Sa
Hung=the Infinite, vibrating and real.

The mantra literally means: “I am Thou. It is also used to mean, The service of God is within me. “

Mudra: Bend the arms and bring the elbows against the side of the rib cage. The palms of the hands are parallel and face the sky  (see picture of Snatam above). The elbows are snug at your sides with the forearms in close to your upper arms. The hands are at a 60 degree angle, halfway between pointing forward and pointing to the sides.

Time: 11 minutes.

End: Inhale deeply, hold your breath and visualize the person you want to send healing to (it can be yourself). Make that image in your mind very clear and see a glowing green light around the person. Keeping that person in your mind, exhale. Inhale deeply, hold your breath and continue to send the person healing green light. Still keeping that vision in your mind, exhale. For the last time, inhale deeply, hold your breath and see the person very clearly, see the green healing light bathing the person, bathing every cell in the body. Exhale and relax.

Learn the Kundalini Yoga Mantras

August 18, 2008

I finally got my hands on a copy of the Kundalini Mantra Instruction album

Kundalini Mantra Instruction

Kundalini Mantra Instruction

by my good friend Gurudass Kaur. It is a great contribution to the practice of kundalini yoga. She covers most of the mantras used throughout the classes.

Yogi Bhajan often spoke of the upper palate as keys on a piano. The effects of mantra were realized through the motion of the tongue on the palate and the teeth. These points were sensitive and would then have effects on the brain. He would then stress the importance of pronunciation in realizing these experiences.

This CD is real helpful in that regard. I have hyperlinked the searches to other music on our site in case you want more music with those mantras. Unfortunately there is not uniformity in the spelling, so some things are missed. All results were found by narrowing the search to track names on spiritvoyage.com and then entering the desired mantra.

The Mantras on this CD are:

1. Ong namo guroo dayv namo
2. Aad guray nameh
3. Aad such, jugaad such, hai bhee such, Naanak hosee bhee such
